Blast from the past Robin Olds Mig Killer Phantom built by Dave Boksanski

Another model built by Boh for Scale Modeler.   If you have been following this blog you will see that Boh was prolific model builder.  Not much was a change to him.  He would jump into the model
build while puffing on his big cigar.  When I would come by to build models with him. I could tell by the cloud of cigar smoke as to how the build was  going.   Dave sure loved his cigars.

The kit was the 1/72 revell F-4C kit.  In 1973 it was the best Phantom around at that time.  The model was sanded down to remove the surface details and rivets.   The model was scribe with a number 11 exacto blade.  I can hear the screams.. OMG with an exacto blade.   It would be several year later when Al Mason of  Bare metal foil would bring out his scribing tools.  I believe he was the first to make a commercial scribing tool.    How far we have come...  Enjoy thanks to Charlie Dunton for finding the article for the blog.

Boksanski Scratch built BE-12 Russian Seaplane

Another scratch built model by Dave (BOH) Boksanski.  This is 1/72 seaplane built out of several different  model kits.  The Emily fly boat is the main piece to make the fuselage.  Aurora CF-100  engines are the bases of the turboprop engine.  The rest was sheet stryene.  Thanks goes to Charle Dunton for provide the article from his collection of Scale Modeler.

Another blast from the Past Jan 1973 converting a TU-144 to TU-95

This article is by Mike Dario.  Mike was another awesome modeler.  Plus he was a good buddy with BOH.  When the two got to together it was magic.    Boh told that we had writing so many article for Scale Modeler. That they had to used fake names.  Funny no body in the 70's bitched about a kit.  They would just fix the problem. It was all about modelling.  Enjoy.   Again the article was scan by Charlie Dunton.

F-86D by Dave "BOH" Boksanski 1/72 rareplanes conversion.

Again thanks for Charlie Dunton send me the article.  If you have not noticed BOH wrote many articles for Scale Modeler.

This model was a conversion using the Rareplane  vacuum form kit.  When BOH wrote the article this was at the time the only way to make a "D" model.  It never fails a major model with make out.  Airfx was first with their.   It was a great kit with raised panel lines.  Later Hasegawa released their F-86D. The Hasegawa kit hands down is the best of all.   Here is the article enjoy.

Jan 23 1973 Scale Article on Skyraiders "Kit bashed and Scratch building Skyraider Variants."

Another article by Boh (Dave Boksanski).   The Fujimi 1/72 Skyraider was the base kit for the conversion.  Also Monograms 1/72 A-1E.   During early 70's the monogram kit was state of the art model kit.  BOH had such talent he would look at a kit.  Next day he would have the model convert into another type.  Just wonder what he could do to today with all the latest modelling tools.
Thanks again to Charlie for providing the photos of the articles.

Another Blast from the Past. "Catapult Mounts for Models"

Another article from Scale Modeler magazine.   I remember buying my first copy on the way home from High School.  It was my freshman year at Osborn High in Detroit.   There was with small family run Pharmacy  on the corner of Joann St & Seven mile.  The druggist was a modeler and carried the magazine.

Back to the article.  Boh (Dave Boksanski) and Mike Dario where the premiere model builder on the west coast at this time.  These guy where best friends who loved model.  The article below can be opened in a new tab and enlarged for reading.   Boh at that time would just make it. Having some back ground in model trains this was a simple quick work. Today I can hear people piss and moan about all that work.  Not really, more than likely whipped the catapult in a few hours.  Today with 3d modelling and printing there is no comparison.  But if BOH was still alive he would have one.   Thanks again to Charlie Dunton for digging through his archive of Scale Modeler.   Charlie promised more to come after the holiday. Enjoy this Blast from the past.

Another amazing TU-114 model by Dave Boksanski

Thanks to Charlie Dunton for this 1972 article by Dave.   Today I hear people complain about models kits. This is wrong, the shape is off.  But Boh would just find some plastic tubing or another part from a different aircraft.  Next thing you know it was fix.   Here is a prime example of old school modeling.

1/72 C-47 by Boh

Here is another article Boh did way back.  More than likely it was done in California. During the time he was a USAF recruiter in the San Francisco area.   Remember Dave telling me that he and Mike Dairo wrote a ton of article the magazine.  Also Dave said  the editor was a cheap S.O.B as the payment for the article came very slow...  Dave could work magic with an airbrush.  Enjoy another blast from the past. Thanks to Charlie Dunton for providing the article.

BOH's 1/32 F-105

My buddy Dave has been gone since 1982.  Still miss the great and crazy times modeling with him in the basement of his home.  Plus the many trips to kill a few brains cells at the Polish VFW post in Flint.  Found these pictures surfing the internet.   Wish I had more pictures.  Hard to believe this is a Combat model vacuumed kit'

Some Memories about Boh

David "Bo" Boksanski.
Anyone remember this incredibly talented, cigar-chomping character?
Heard this story, which might, in fact, be apocryphal:
A modeler was bragging about his output to an IPMS chapter in
California.  Fellow IPMS'ers "Bo" Boksanski and (the late) Mike Dario
then built AN ENTIRE CARRIER AIR GROUP by the next month's meeting to
show the first guy what output REALLY meant!
Don't know whether THAT was true . . . but I personally know Bo
constructed 14 Revell 1/48 109G-10's in a little over two week's time.
Anyone have similar "Bo" anecdotes?
David L. Veres

Yes Bo, Mike and another individual did indeed build an entire CAG,
what's more they did it over one weekend, cleaned out all the decals in
Northern CA to do it..
Bo also took second at the St Louis IPMS Nats (one before last) with a
Combat F-101. Couldn't figure out how he did it,(make the Combat kit look
so good). Before he died, Mike Dario told me that the entire rear end
came from a Revell 1/32 F-4.

Oxmoron
David,
Don't know about the air wing, but around March 71 Bo brought in
50 or so 1/72 Fujimi Skyraiders to the Sacramento chapter meeting. What
a guy.  We were meeting at a steak house that had a huge meeting room.
Those meetings were always a blast with outstanding models and modelers.
Mike Dario, rest his soul was always so supportive.  Those were the
days and I was there....

Remembering an old friend Dave Boksanski

As sit here late at night not being able to sleep well.  It came to me the my good buddy pasted away on Valentines day 1983.   Dave was my buddy.  Our family use to get together for dinner.  He was one of the Premier model builder in 60's, 70's and early 80's.   A lot of his aircraft where in the old Scale Modeler Magazines.   This clean sweep at the IPMS Reg 4 regional.

Miss you Boh.  Hard to believe its been 33 years since I seen that great smile.

Some quotes about Dave.

One last thought. Anyone who attended the 1977 IPMS nationals in San
Francisco would have no trouble explaining why that was the best convention ever, especially
the banquet. This area has also been the home to some of the finest modelers in the world including the late, very lamented George Lee and Dave Boksanski.

Happy Modeling
