Royal New Zealand post war P-51D decals by Venture.

The RNZF ended up with a lot of P-51D after the war.    These decals show all the colorful marking during this time period.   Hope this inspires a few modelers to built a few of the RAAF Mustangs.

Nathan Howland P-51 MUSTANGS 8TH AIRFORCE ENGLAND

Two P-51D-15-NA Mustangs of the 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group, sit in alphabetical order within their blast pen at Station # 357 Duxford.

In the foreground is 44-15469 MX-J “Bucephalus” of Lt. William E Hydorn and named after the famous war horse of Alexander the Great. The photo is obviously taken before 9th February 1945 as on that day, Lt. Hydorn managed to shoot down an Me262 air-air, and the victory marking is not yet applied. In the background is 44-15574 MX-I of Lt. Wayne F Bechtelheimer who did not name his Mustang.

The man painting the nose-art onto “Bucephalus” was responsible for doing the nose-art a huge number of 78th aircraft from the unit throughout the war. Thought to have been a sign-writer prior to the war, he had very distinctive lettering style and quality of workmanship. He painted the now iconic P-51D 'Big Beautiful Doll' nose-art that was flown famously by Col. John Landers, but others include 'Frances Dell', 'Eileen', 'Sweet & Lovely', 'Spokane Chief', 'Sherman Was Right !', 'Sabotage Jr', 'Barbara Ann', 'Percey', 'The Green Hornet', 'Flagari', 'Darkie', 'Bad Medicine', 'Isabel', 'Screaming Demon', 'Contrary Mary'....to name but a few!

This might be the only photo that exists of this wonderful artist actually applying his trade on yet another 78th FG aircraft, but sadly, no-one currently alive from group can remember who he was, and find that extremely sad!

Note the Gray star and bar.  Wonder if this was the pilot or crew chief choice to paint it gray.

Soon to be released long range P-51D from Iwo Jima.

Looks like another home run for Eduard.  I just wonder if they will include the long range tanks for the P-51...

1/72 P-51C build Bonnie "B"

Trying my hand at building a P-51C. This is the academy kit.  Overall it isn't that bad of a kit.  I had started for the 2019 IPMS national for the D-Day special award.  Needless to say I ran out of time. Because I couldn't get off my lazy ass...lol.    Below in the aircraft I was trying to recreate.

Lucky for me Kits-World has a decal sheet for it.  Not quite correct but close enough.  What If find interesting in the photo is the OD band between the invasion stripe on the fuselage.

P-51 Mustang info

The big debate over natural finished P-51.  The image below shows what was painted. Plus natural metal areas on the air
frame.

Light grey area is where the putty was applied on the wings.

IDF P-51d paint colors.

This blog is mostly a reference sort for me.  I don't have  many people reading.  This is why the blog is a little goofy in what I post.   Years ago a did a IDF P-51d using what I thought where the correct paints.   Found this a while back only to misplace  the information. Here it is that least I can find it now.

127th ANG F-51

I found with on face book.   Finding early Michigan Air National guards aircraft is not easy.  I wonder how many of these types of photos are just sitting in a box somewhere.

Did you know the P-51D had five different canopy type.

Today I just found out that the P-51D had five different types of canopies.   I had know of  two types one from Texas and other for Long beach.  Guess you need to check photos of the original aircraft to make sure you have the correct one.

F-51 Korean war pictures

From what I can see the F-51 used during the Korean where pretty abused aircraft.  What I have read these aircraft flew numerous sorties a day.  With very little maintenance, only what was needed to keep the aircraft flying.  Almost all had been painted with silver paint after the second world war.  Spare parts became a problem.  Open air repairs.  Let say it was a major mess.

Note: Most of the cockpits had been painted black on the F-51's.

Here are the picture to show how rough the aircraft where.  All pictures are reference and I claim no ownership on them.

Amazing amount dirt from firing the guns.

Note the wear of the wing root.  One can see the prime paint and skin
